Dave Maric is a British composer of acoustic and electronic music.
Maric studied music at City University, London where he focused primarily on performance and music technology. Upon leaving in 1991 his noted abilities as a pianist (which combined classical training with explorations into various forms of jazz and improvisation) swiftly led to a diverse range of performance opportunities with, amongst others, Marc Ribot, Gunther Schuller, John Adams, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Steve Martland Band and numerous jazz and rock bands..
But it wasn't until 2000 that he was awarded his first commission: Trilogy, a work for the percussion soloist Colin Currie; the immediate success of which led to a number of new chamber works for classical soloists such as violinist Viktoria Mullova and pianists Katia and Marielle Labeque.
Katia Labeque also collaborated with Maric for a number of years on a live performance project called the Katia Labeque Band which toured the UK and Europe on numerous occasions and released one album recording in 2003: Unspoken.
Further commissions were also received from various festivals and organizations such as the Lucerne Festival, Radio France, and BBC Radio 3 and included new works for Labeque, Mullova and Currie as well as l'Orchestre National de Montpellier, trumpeter Hakan Hardenberger and guitarist Fred Frith. Many of the works written for Colin Currie appear on the album recording Borrowed Time released by Onyx Classics in 2007.
Maric has had a long interest in classical and contemporary dance. His chamber work Broken Fiction (2002) became the first of many works which have been choreographed to, and in turn has led to numerous new works for dance including; You, Cuba (2004) - four short dance films for Channel 4, UK, and Shore (2006) - a site specific work for voices, winds and percussion by Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland.
Most notable however are the full evening works; Ghosts (2005) for the Royal Opera House, his first orchestral ballet score; A Tale of Two Cities (2008) for Northern Ballet Theatre, and Sturmhöhe (Wuthering Heights) (2009) for the Bern Ballett.
